Cates Sheet Metal Industries, Inc., practices a safety policy and philosophy of zero accidents. We are committed to protecting and promoting the health and safety of our employees, and it has become part of our culture and daily practices.
Our Safety Program was developed to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations with particular emphasis on the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA).
Our policy of zero accidents is intended to prevent all accidents and human suffering, as even minor incidents oftentimes cause physical and mental pain, as well as financial hardship. We are committed to this worthwhile and achievable goal.

In February 2011, Safety Director Jim Pickel received the “2010 Builders Association Safety Professional of the Year Award”. Jim was selected among all applicants – from General Contractors to sub-contractors large and small.
In February 2011, Cates Sheet Metal received the “2010 Contractor of the Year Award for Mid-sized Subcontractors - 150,001 to 300,000 work hours”. This award is given annually by the Builder’s Association for the Excellence in Safety Awards. The basis of judging was per the following criteria: overview of the company safety program, high level of employee involvement in safety, new programs, procedures or resources used by company to promote safety, management’s involvement/commitment to safety, and unique program elements used by the company to promote and heighten safety awareness.
On March 10, 2010, Jim A. Pickel and Sandra Needle were presented a plaque from the Midwest Builders Casualty Mutual Company. The award was given in recognition of Outstanding Contribution to Loss Prevention/Loss Control.
On March 11, 2010, Cates Sheet Metal was present with a plaque for 2nd Place in the Builders’ Association’s “Safety Excellence Awards Program for the Subcontractor Division 100,001 – 300,000 work hours”.
On March 25, 2010, Cates Sheet Metal sent 2 Supervisors, 7 Foremen, 4 Journeymen and 4 Apprentices to an 8-hour Fall Protection Certification class. This class covered current federal regulations, proposed changes and certified individuals to select, inspect fall protection equipment and the proper use of this equipment.
On February 23, 2010, we had six Supervisors/Foremen and all of our truck drivers attend a comprehensive training program for rigging. This was conducted by the Crosby Group in conjunction with American Riggers.
Our Foremen and Supervisors have been recertified in First Aid, Adult CPR and AED training.
On January 26th and 27th, 2011, Cates Sheet Metal had 77 employees and spouses participate in the Mo-Kan Sheet Metal Welfare Fund’s “Wellness Program”. Cates has now participated four straight years.
